The Tibetan Terrier has moderate exercise requirements. Plan for at least an hour of brisk walks, play sessions, and occasional off-lead runs every day to keep your Tibetan Terrier physically healthy and mentally settled. Combining physical activity with basic obedience practice or interactive play sessions helps meet both the physical and mental needs of the Tibetan Terrier. Although they can adapt to apartment living, Tibetan Terrier owners without a garden should plan to provide at least an hour of outdoor exercise daily without fail.

Exercise by Life Stage

Puppy 8 weeks – 12 months

Short, frequent play sessions are ideal. Aim for 5 minutes per month of age, up to twice daily. Free play in a safe garden is excellent for Tibetan Terrier puppies.

Avoid high-impact activities such as jumping and long runs until at least 12 months. Puppy joints are still developing.

Adult 1–7 years

Adult Tibetan Terriers require At least 1 hour of exercise per day. Brisk walks, Play sessions, Occasional off-lead runs are all suitable. Consistency is key — irregular exercise followed by long sessions increases injury risk.

Avoid exercise in high heat; Tibetan Terriers with short muzzles or heavy coats are particularly susceptible to heatstroke. Always carry water.

Senior 8+ years

Senior Tibetan Terriers still need daily exercise but at a reduced intensity. Shorter, more frequent walks are preferable to fewer long sessions. Swimming is an excellent low-impact option for older dogs.

Watch for signs of stiffness, reluctance to exercise, or difficulty rising — these may indicate arthritis or other age-related conditions. Consult your vet if you notice changes in mobility.

Living Environment & Exercise

Apartment Suitable

The Tibetan Terrier can adapt to apartment living, provided their daily exercise requirement of At least 1 hour is consistently met. Without access to a garden, owners must plan outdoor sessions around the Tibetan Terrier's energy levels. Nearby parks or green space are strongly recommended.

Tibetan Terriers are generally good with other dogs — off-lead exercise with other well-socialised dogs can be a valuable part of their daily activity. Dog parks and group walks work well for this breed.
